WIPER BLADES AND DRIVING SAFETY

Wiper blades can be a safety hazard if they become damaged or worn. They impair your visibility and consequently reduce your reaction time in the event of an accident.

Yet, wiper blades deteriorate so gradually, it is often difficult to notice.

So how can you tell if your blades need replacing? Look for these signs…

Inspect your windshield for these signs

        - Oil-like film or missed sections
        - Blades lifting off the windshield or beading after the blade passes
        - Blades chattering across the glass

Inspect your blades for these signs

        - Cracked, split or slashed rubber, worn, ragged edges
        - Road grime, chemical-causing film or other contamination
        - Torn rubber pulling away from the blade
        - Bent or cracked wiper arm or wiper blade
        - Lost flexibility in rubber

   How to replace your blades

        - Gently lift the wiper arm and rotate the blade at the pivot
        - Pinch the release tab on the wiper blade
        - Slide the blade assembly out from the hook and out of the wiper arm
        - Slide on a replacement blade of the same length
        - Gently push until locking tab clicks into place

Wipe off any buildup of road grime, chemicals and salt from the rubber edges of the blade with a sponge or a soft cloth and a mild cleaner. Every time you clean your windshield, remember to quickly clean your wiper blades too.

BEST PRACTICE SAFE DRIVING TIPS

This road safety information has been developed as part of a joint initiative between BCAA and ICBC.

   Seat Belts

80% of people who are involved in a crash and do not wear a seat belt are injured or killed.

A seat belt reduces the risk and helps prevent injusry and death in a crash.

        -  Make sure your three-point seat belt fits snug and low over the hips
        -  Shoulder harness diagonally across your upper body
        -  When you have a choice never use a lap belt only
        -  Pregnant women should make sure the lap belt is snug and below the baby

   Head Restraints

        -  70% of all injuries in crashes are soft tissue injuries to the neck and back
        -  A head restraint helps reduce soft tissue injuries to the head and body

   Protect your neck and back

        -  Adjust your head restraint on every trip
        -  Raise it so the top of it is at least level with the top of the ears
        -  Don't forget your passengers too!
        -  It should be no more than 10cm (4 inches) from the back of your head

   Anti-lock braking systems

        - ABS allows you to steer around an object even with maximum braking

   Driving with ABS

       -  Hold the brake pedal down firmly
       -  Do not pump your brake pedal
       -  Steer around the obstacle you want to avoid - even while applying full brakes

   What to expect with ABS

       -  ABS does not allow you to stop on a dime. Expect usual stopping distances
       -  Allow for longer stopping distances when driving on gravel, slush or snow
       -  You may notice a unique sound and feel, such as a brake pedal pulse or kickback

   Aggresive driving

About 73% of victims injured in unsafe speed related collisions were in vehicles travelling at unsafe speeds.

        -  Be realistic about your travel time and allow for possible delays
        -  If you're going to be late, accept it
        -  Set a good example for other drivers
        -  Slow down and keep your distance
        -  If another driver is too close, safely move out of the way and let the vehicle pass
        -  Don't react to gestures and don't return them
        -  Avoid eye contact

   Night driving

To avoid blinding other drivers, dim your high beam headlights when you are 150 metres from meeting or following a vehicle. Driving at night is a challenge - your vision is limited and your reactions may be delayed due to fatigue.

   Reduce your risk at night

        -  Slow down
        -  Increase your following distance
        -  Keep your eyes moving
        -  Scan carefully for pedestrians, cyclists, and animals
        -  Glance to the right edge of the road to avoid glare from oncoming lights
        -  Adjust your rear view mirror for night driving
        -  Keep windows and lights clean
        -  Keep interior lights off and keep the instrument panel lights low

   Staying alert

        -  Plan long trips so you're driving during daylight hours
        -  Get a good night's sleep the night before you leave
        -  Plan rest breaks every two hours
        -  Allow lots of time to get to your destination
        -  Pull over if you start to feel drowsy
        -  Get out, and walk around your vehicle, stretch, get some fresh air

Not enough? Pull over to a safe stopping spot, turn off your can and take a nap!
